Implementation of CARES Act Unemployment Benefits For Self-Employed, Gig Economy and Other Workers

Massachusetts residents who are not eligible for regular unemployment benefits can now apply online for the new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program.

The new federal PUA program provides up to 39 weeks of unemployment benefits who are unable to work because of a COVID-19-related reason but are not eligible for regular or extended unemployment benefits. This includes self-employed workers, independent contractors, gig economy workers, and those with limited work history.   • AG’s Office Announces New Grant Program and Partnership to Provide Relief for Small Businesses During COVID-19 Pandemic $500,000 Grant Program Will Provide Funds to be Distributed to Local Small Businesses; Partnership Will Provide Pro Bono Legal Support.


The AG’s Small Business Relief Partnership Grant Program will provide funding to municipalities and regional planning agencies who are assisting small businesses in the communities they serve. Grant funds will be distributed by these organizations to help small business address fixed debt, payroll, accounts payable, lost sales, lost opportunities, and other working capital expenses incurred by the COVID-19 pandemic.
