The City of Salem has been exploring adding a second commuter rail stop, the South Salem Commuter Rail station (SSRC), to bridge the distance between downtown Salem and the City’s two largest employers - North Shore Medical Center and Salem State University. Proposed for an area along Canal Street, the key properties on which a station/stop may be developed are privately-owned or owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) and are in an Opportunity Zone.
The SSCR neighborhood has the potential for a range of commercial, housing, and mixed-use development, and the area may be enhanced through smart growth, transit-oriented development principles.
